Soules swamp has become the central issue in the City of Whiteville. I know, first hand, the frustration of flooding in downtown Whiteville. The CCN office sits on an area that was still swamp about 80 years ago. The water doesn’t recognize that this is now dry land, and as such, we are flooded when there’s a major rain event. Cortez Mikell Smith of Chadbourn was jailed Monday on multiple charges of methamphetamine trafficking and other drug felonies. Smith also faces charges of selling drugs near a school. The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office took Smith into custody after an extended investigation.
