Church Member Thwarts Alleged Thief

A larceny suspect is being sought after allegedly threatening a member of a Whiteville church with a knife — then fleeing when the congregant responded with a board.
Whiteville Police said the incident occurred Oct. 21 around 9:30 a.m. The report said a member of Facts of Life Church was driving past the Lee Street campus when he spotted a man coming out from behind a church building.
The member stopped to speak to the man about possible thefts from the church, and the man allegedly pulled a knife, the report said.
The church member then grabbed a wooden board to defend himself, causing the suspect to put the knife away and flee the scene.
The investigation is continuing.
