The winter is trying to make its way out, and events are moving into Columbus County over the next several weeks. There is a booking signing, a night of worship, revivals, and donation drives to keep you busy. Southern Farm Days at the Boys and Girls Home of N.C. is right around the corner, and the Chadbourn Community Library will hold a hot dog lunch sale to benefit the facility.

Lake Waccamaw Town Hall and Friends of Rube McCray Library will be hosting a very special guest on Feb. 26. Dereck Whittenburg, member of the legendary 1983 N.C. State National Championship basketball team, will be signing his book, The Shot Heard Around the World: How I Went from the Playground to the White House, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Whittenburg is also currently over Community Relations, Fund-Raising, and Student Support at N.C. State as their Associate Athletic Director.
Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase for $30 (cash or credit card). All proceeds from the book will benefit the Dereck Whittenburg Foundation, a non-profit offering financial assistance to deserving college students facing hindrance of finance as a barrier to completion of their college degrees.
The event is free and open to the public. Lake Waccamaw Town Hall can be found at 205 Flemington Drive.
Carolyn’s Kaleidoscope Child Advocacy Center is holding a Diaper and Wipe Drive through the end of February for families in need in Columbus and surrounding counties. Diapers of all sizes, diaper rash cream, and wipes are welcome.
Drop off locations include the center located at 219 North Lee Street in Whiteville, and CrossFit of Lake Waccamaw at 116 East Old Highway 74/74 in the Hillcrest Plaza.

Bus drivers at Hallsboro Artesia Elementary were gifted supplies by the St. James Missionary Baptist Church WMU last week. The HAES and the drivers thanked the church for ‘loving on our school community and supporting our Panthers.’
The Sheep Dog Foundation is now accepting kids ages 8-12 years into Troop Hard Charger. The veteran lead military style program teaches kids athletics, survival, martial arts, trades and more. Uniforms and gear will be issued.

The Veterans Benefits Administration will be at the Veterans Memorial Park of America again this weekend on Feb. 27 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. There is limited availability, and those interested are asked to call 910.840.5207 for an appointment.
Refreshments for vets will be served at the event. The park is located at 6354 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville.
The Columbus County Arts Council will be hosting the ‘Columbus County Barn Quilt Trail Project’ kickoff on Feb. 27 from 5:30-7 p.m. They will also be unveiling two new quilt panels for the trail at the event, and light refreshments will be served.

Join Engage Life Church at Candlewood Farms Coffee and Bakery on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. for a night of worship. The door will open at 6 p.m. prior to the service. The shop is located at 721 South Madison Street in Whiteville.
If you’re thinking about heading to college in the fall, you may need a little help with filling out your FAFSA. Join Southeastern Community College on Feb. 28 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. for FAFSA Day in the campus library.
The college’s Financial Aid staff will be available to assist both current and prospective students and their parents with the application process. There will also be giveaways for attendees. Take the next step in funding your future. SCC can be found at 4564 Chadbourn Highway in Whiteville.
Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church will be hosting their spring revival from March 1-4. Speakers will include Reverend Andy Lambert, Reverend Kari Howard, and Sherry Melvin. The Wilmington Celebration Choir will perform on March 1, and Willing Heart will sing each night from March 2-4.
Everyone is welcome. Wednesday will be a service focused on healing. Nursery will be available during all service times for kids four years old and under. The church is located at 506 Lake Shore Drive in Lake Waccamaw.
Speaking of revivals, the Columbus Baptist Association will be preaching the Gospel at Peace Baptist Church on March 2-7 at 7 p.m. each evening.
Speakers will include Stephen Nobles, Ben Worthington, Colton Reaves, and Glenn Stanley. The church can be found at 653 Love Mill Road in Whiteville.
The Chadbourn Community Library will have a hot sale on March 6 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The plates are $10 each and come with two hot dogs, a cookie, a bag of chips, and a drink.

The Whiteville Police Department welcomed two new faces to the team last week. Detective Zachary Campbell and Officer Elizabeth Brown have joined the WPD family. The department looks forward to seeing the positive impacts these folks will make in the community.
