Woman Beat Disabled Child with Bat, Warrants Show

A Chadbourn-area woman allegedly beat a disabled child with a baseball bat and other blunt objects, according to arrest warrants.

Tammie Bennett Rutledge, 62, was held under $10,000 secured bond, charged with felony assault on a disabled person and misdemeanor domestic violence.

Because the victim is a resident of the same address, CCN is not sharing that information.

Deputies were called to the home on march 24 after a report that a child needed a medical and mental health evaluation, according to the report.

“During the investigation, deputies and medical staff observed significant bruising and injuries on the juvenile,” the report said. An investigation was opened by the Dept. of Social Services, and warrants were obtained May 14.

The report states that Rutledge is alleged to have used a “baseball bat and other objects” on the child. Warrants note that the child had serious, large bruises that lasted longer than 48 hours.
