One Charged in Fatal Crash

A Clarkton man was charged in the fatal crash of a Columbus County Sheriff’s Deputy this morning (June 25).

David Samuel McPherson, 33, of 941 Page’s Rd., Clarkton, is being held on $100,000 secured bond, according to court records. He is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, reckless driving, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He was booked into the Columbus County Detention Center at 2:06 p.m.

Damien Draper Bost was parked in the median of U.S.74 with his blue lights activated in a work zone when his patrol vehicle was hit just after 11 a.m. The westbound lanes of the highway were reopened around 2 p.m.

Family members posted on social media that Bost died from his injuries.

The deputy joined the sheriff’s office in 2018 and had served as a school resource officer, among other assignments.

“He was great guy,” said Jonathan McKeithan of KLZ Gunworks. “He was my kids’ resource officer at Old Dock. He was always a good guy. We never had any issues with him.”

McKeithan’s wife Kayla said she went to school with Bost.

“He’s always been such a gentle soul,” she said. “We hadn’t spoken in years until our kids started at Old Dock School. He made a huge impact on them, and they are heartbroken.

“I know he was definitely one of the good ones that’s been taken too soon.”

Robin Worley said Bost was a “dedicated father, deputy and a very hard worker.

“He ran a lawn care business on the side.  He loved his wife and kids. He and his brother Skylar ran the Haunted Trails in Nakina.

“He was a loyal friend, for sure.”

The sheriff’s office will hold a press conference at 5 p.m.to provide more information. This is a developing story.
