Here’s today’s Bottom Line
If you’re looking for widespread drought relief … or heat relief … I’ve got some bad news.
Neither are on the horizon.
Hot temperatures with heat index values over 100 degrees will continue at least into the coming weekend.
Limited rain chances in the form of scattered afternoon thunderstorms will continue today and tomorrow before the high pressure ridge, the so-called “heat dome,” reasserts dominance for the end of the week. Highs today and tomorrow in the mid to upper 90s will flirt with the Misery Mark again on Thursday and Friday, before easing back just a touch over the weekend.
Localized downpours may produce a quick inch or two of rainfall, but that’s the problem. It’s a quick hit. The ground is dry and very hard once you get below the first few inches of soil. When you get a heavy dump of rain, that water just rolls off the surface and into the storm drains… it doesn’t really provide relief.
Furthermore, the 1-2 inches of rain some places might pick up amounts to a teaspoon of sand on the beach when compared to the magnitude of our drought. It will take AT LEAST 10-15 inches of rain to bring things back to where they need to be. “Rain with a name.” Meanwhile, the lawns continue to burn, the corn is dry, and the pain continues.
