Suspects Fights, Bites His Way Into Jail

A Chadbourn man is in jail under no bond after allegedly attacking a man in Evergreen, biting him repeatedly while trying to steal his car.

The suspect later allegedly fought with — and tried to bite — arresting deputies, according to the sheriff’s office.

James Adams Montgomery, 27, faces seven counts of assaulting an officer; common law robbery; and three counts of resisting an officer. He was held without bond. His address was listed on court documents as 200 W. Sixth Ave., Chadbourn.

Deputies went to the Evergreen community to investigate calls about a man allegedly attempting to enter vehicles and homes. The man was “Acting erratically,” the report said.

Deputies were in the area when they were dispatched to the area of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church on Andrew Jackson Highway around 3:14 p.m., according to the report. The victim, a 68 year old male, said he was attacked by a man matching Montgomery’s description, who tried to take his car. The victim’s glasses were broken and his clothing damaged.

“The citizen reported being bitten multiple times in the encounter,” the report said.

Montgomery was taken into custody nearby, and additional deputies were called to assist in his arrest.

“Throughout the encounter, Montgomery allegedly kicked, fought, attempted to bite deputies, and spat at responding law enforcement personnel,” the report said.

Montgomery was evaluated by EMS and transported to the county detention center.

“While being admitted into the detention facility,” the report said, “Montgomery continued his aggressive behavior by resisting officers, attempting to bite personnel, and spitting on multiple law enforcement and detention officers before he was ultimately restrained and secured.”

The report did not detail the extent of the first victim’s injuries.
