High Speed Chase Crosses State Lines

A chase July 20 led from Tabor city to Green Sea, ending with the suspect facing charges in North and South Carolina.

O’Rico Wells, 34, faces charges of fleeing to elude, possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver marijuana and cocaine, maintaining a vehicle for drug activity, resisting, drug paraphernalia, and two counts of failure to appear. He was released on $8,000 secured bond.

The sheriff’s office said detectives were patrolling near Carolina and Fair Bluff Roads as part of an intensive effort responding to citizen complaints of suspicious activity. Detectives noticed a Hyundai automobile  that failed to stop at Eighth Street and Fair Bluff Road, an initiated a traffic stop.

Wells allegedly sped away, heading into South Carolina at speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour. Wells was finally stopped in Green Sea, and taken into custody. He was held under a fugitive warrant at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center until he was extradited to Columbus County.

“Citizen involvement remains an important part of keeping our communities safe,” Sheriff Bill Rogers said. “We appreciate those who report suspicious activity and assist our deputies and detectives in identifying areas that require additional attention.”
