Here’s today’s Bottom Line
Unsettled. That’s the general rule of the forecast over the next several days.
A few intervals of sunshine today but the threat for showers and thunderstorms will increase through the afternoon hours. I’m not expecting any severe weather, but locally intense rainfall is possible wherever thunderstorms form and move. Repeated thunderstorms over the same area could pose a flooding risk.
Better shower and storm chances tonight through Tuesday. A tropical atmosphere will be in place… without a tropical system. A warm front will lift northwestward onshore and this will be the initial “spark” for showers and thunderstorms. The showers and storms should push toward our area later this afternoon.
At the same time, a trough (an elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure) will push down to the Gulf coast. This will enhance the moisture across our area, lasting through at least Tuesday.
Model blends show the highest rain totals along the immediate coast, primarily over Brunswick and New Hanover counties. Slightly lesser amounts are shown over Columbus and Bladen counties, but still checking in with between 1.25 and 1.75 inches of rainfall through 8 AM Wednesday.
It should be noted that rain totals are likely to be HIGHLY variable and HIGHLY dependent on where thunderstorms become established. As mentioned above, some areas could get quite a bit of rain while other areas receive relatively little.
The shower and storm chances are expected to return to more “seasonable” levels for the second half of the work week. The modeling is somewhat … iffy … on that, with some indications of a “closed low” forming over the area. We’ll have to wait and see on that one. My forecast drops off to 20% and 30% chances for the end of the week but that could change over the next few days.
