As the summer finally winds down, organizations are already planning events throughout the month of August. Volunteer some time, donate to a good cause, or catch the last VBS happening near you. There are plenty of opportunities to do great things in Columbus County in the coming weeks.

Daisy Vereen Brooks and the Facts of Life Community Outreach Program hosts their Nourish Hope distribution event every Wednesday at 11 a.m. to N.C. and S.C. residents. The Columbus County Community Farmers Market opens on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-7 p.m. and every Saturday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Come shop fresh and local and support vendors and farmers in our community.
The market has fresh produce, farm-fresh eggs, homemade breads, jams and jellies, local honey, fresh juices, handmade jewelry, custom tumblers, crafts, games for all ages, live music, and so much more. The market is located at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.
Congratulations are in order for the newest members of the Varsity and Junior Varsity volleyball teams at East Columbus. Skylah Collins, Journey Sutton, Nevaeh Brown, Grace Coyle, Ashlynn Smith, Millie Bracey, Jaliyah Brown, Ma’Laya Webb, and Addy Spaulding will be heading up the Varsity team.
The Junior Varsity division will be holding down the net with Sunday Lane, Kynley Scott, Aleeah Harrell, Kayden Johnson, Whisper Moore, Jasmine Johnson, Joselyn Martinez, Analia Arellano, and Zoey Graham.
Glory Tabernacle Church will be having their VBS just in time for the kiddos to have a little fun before school starts back. The event will be held this week, Aug. 6-7, from 6-8 p.m. On Aug. 8, the church will wrap things up with Family Fun Day from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Bible adventures, games, music, fun, and a whole lot of God’s love is on tap for GTC’s Galaxy VBS. Registration is now open at www.gtcconnect.org/vbs/. The church is located at 4513 Pleasant Plains Church Road in Whiteville.
Movies on Madison will be returning on Friday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville. The next film in the series will be The Iron Giant. This free event is sponsored by the International Paper Foundation.
Museum doors will open at 7 p.m., and the movie will start upstairs at 8 p.m. Arrive before showtime with natural science activities on the museum floor.

The museum is also offering Nature Storytime and Playdates throughout the summer. The programs will be available through August, with Nature Storytime evert Thursday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and Playdate with Nature at 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays.
Allen and Jenni Strickland and Pam Byrd will be holding a free back to school community event on Aug. 8 at the Todd House Event Center from 2-6 p.m. There will be water slides, games, entertainment, and food for children and their families.

Lakeside worship services will continue to run every weekend through Labor Day Sunday. The services are held at 9 a.m. at the Lake Waccamaw Campground Pavilion. Located at 3010 Canal Cove Road. On Aug. 9, this Sunday, the speaker will be Bryan Fowler accompanied by a singer from Hallsboro Baptist Church.
The Columbus County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism will be having their LeadHERship Columbus Breakfast Series on Aug. 11 from 8-9 a.m. The guest speaker will be Jennifer Walsh. Walsh is a retired warden of Columbus Correction Institution.

A very familiar face in Lake Waccamaw is finally retiring from the State Park, and he’s heading back to Northern Maine. A celebration is planned for Toby Hall on Aug. 14 from 2-4 p.m. at the Lake Waccamaw State Park Visitors Center for friends and colleagues to say goodbye. The center can be found at 1866 State Park Drive.
Nakina Fire and Rescue will be partnering with the North Carolina Forestry Service to host the Volunteer Fire Department Wildland Fire Suppression class on Aug. 11 and Aug. 18. The class will provide essential training in wildland fire behavior, safety, equipment, and suppression techniques for VFD personnel.
Both sessions will begin at 6:30 p.m. both evenings. If your department plans to attend, please contact Victor Jacobs or Rockey McPherson to help them obtain a head count. The station is located at 214 Ramsey Ford Road in Nakina.
The Bold and Beautiful Wigs for Cancer golf tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Tidewater Golf Club. The organization has ties to the Donayre Cancer Center in Whiteville and provides wigs to men, women, and children with hair loss battling cancer and other illnesses. The non-profit operates on donations, fundraisers, and volunteers, and they are based in Little River, S.C.
Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., and the four-person scramble tournament will begin at 9 a.m. The cost is $150 per player, and includes a round of golf, breakfast and lunch, prizes for top teams, and a reception at Joey’s Club House Grille.
An automobile donated by Bell & Bell Buick GMC is among the prizes up for grabs for a hole in one. Other prizes will be handed out for par 3 closest to the pin, the longest drive, and overall team winner of the tournament. Sponsorships are still needed for the event, and the prices range from $100-$5000. The categories include hole sponsors, exclusive hole sponsors, breakfast and lunch sponsors, and event sponsors.

Bladenboro welcomed a new face to their police department last week. Justin Hewett was sworn in at the town’s new chief. Chief Hewett brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and skill to the office. Congratulations on your new position.
The Family Birthing Center at Columbus Regional Healthcare System is inviting expectant mothers in their third trimester and their partners to attend birthing classes at the facility. Space is limited, but they will accommodate all interested participants.
The class will include topics like what to expect during your birth experience, the benefits of breastfeeding and how to be successful, a tour of the center, and a meet and greet with the staff. Refreshments will be served at each session.
The event is free, and each session will run from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Classes are scheduled for the following dates:

The Columbus Baptist Association needs your help for their first Backpack Buddy packing party of the 2026-2027 school year on Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m. The CBA sends children home with food for the weekend who may not otherwise have a meal again until they return to school on Monday.
If you would like to help out, the packing party will be at the CBA office located at 208 South Thompson Street in Whiteville. Donations of Pop Tarts, Beanie Weenies, juice boxes, ramen noodles, crackers, and other individually wrapped items as seen on the flyer are always welcome.
The Columbus County Health Department will be hosting a back-to-school, drive-thru vaccine clinic to help families get ready for the upcoming school year. The clinic will be held on Aug. 18 from 4-6:30 p.m. at the department.
Children entering kindergarten, seventh, and twelfth grade can get their school required vaccinations at the drive thru. Parents and legal guardians must be present and bring the child’s vaccination record (if available) and their insurance card.
Free school supplies will also be handed out. The CCHD is located at 604 North Madison Street in Whiteville.
Catholic Charities will have their mobile pantry open on Aug. 28 at Building Bridges in Fair Bluff beginning at 11 a.m. They will be giving out free diapers for children, adult incontinence supplies, and feminine hygiene products.
Building Bridges is located at 135 Rogers Street.
Lake Waccamaw residents will be participating in their community wide yard sale on Labor Day, Sept. 7, beginning at 7 a.m. Those who are planning to sell are asked to place a sign or a flag in your yard to let folks know you are open for business.
Shoppers are invited to come out and explore, shop, support the Lake community, and find your next treasure. The fourth annual event will span from Jefferson Road, Flemington, Lake Shore Drive, Canal Cove Road, Waccamaw Shores, and the whole Wooded Acres neighborhood.
