Fall is right around the corner, and many organizations are already announcing charity events, festivals, and gatherings in the area. Tons of awesome opportunities to learn, volunteer, and give back to the community will be happening in the coming weeks. Daisy Vereen Brooks and the Facts of Life Community Outreach Program hosts their Nourish Hope distribution event every Wednesday at 11 a.m. to N.C. and S.C. residents. The Columbus County Community Farmers Market opens on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-7 p.m. and every Saturday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Come shop fresh and local and support vendors and farmers in our community.
The market has fresh produce, farm-fresh eggs, homemade breads, jams and jellies, local honey, fresh juices, handmade jewelry, custom tumblers, crafts, games for all ages, live music, and so much more. The market is located at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.
Columbus County Schools was given a gift straight from the heart last week. The American Heart Association recently presented CPR in Schools kits to each of the county’s school nurses, providing valuable resources that can help save lives and make our schools safer. This effort was made possible through the dedication of the American Heart Association, its sponsors, and the Community Impact Team.
Whiteville High School is holding their annual FBLA Hygiene Drive. All donations will go to the Families First organization. FBLA members will receive one point per donated item, but everyone is encouraged to participate.

Catholic Charities will have their mobile pantry open on Aug. 28 at Building Bridges in Fair Bluff beginning at 11 a.m. They will be giving out free diapers for children, adult incontinence supplies, and feminine hygiene products.
Building Bridges is located at 135 Rogers Street.
Columbus Regional Healthcare, Columbus County Partnership for Children, and the George Henry White Memorial Health and Education Center will be coming together to host the End of Summer Health Festival on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
There will be food trucks, a DJ, Kona Ice, free health screenings, healthcare vendors, and a bike raffle at the event. The festival will be held at the George Henry White Memorial Health and Education Center located at 731 Farmer’s Union Road in Clarkton.
Lakeside worship services will continue to run every weekend through Labor Day Sunday. The services are held at 9 a.m. at the Lake Waccamaw Campground Pavilion. Located at 3010 Canal Cove Road. On Aug.30, this Sunday, the speaker will be Randy Hunt, accompanied by Connie Hinnant as the singer.
Fair Bluff will have their First Saturday Market on Sept. 5 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Riverside Drive, and they want you to joy in on the fun. Come out and shop a wide variety of handmade items, food trucks, novelty and specialty items, artisans, and local businesses.

The Artesia Alumni Association Family Fun Day is back in Hallsboro on Sept. 5 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Bogue Park. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy food, fun, games, entertainment, and a raffle. First prize is $100, the second is $50, and the third prize is $25. The drawing will be held at 4 p.m.
The rain date for the event is Monday, Sept. 7.

Lake Waccamaw residents will be participating in their community wide yard sale on Labor Day, Sept. 7, beginning at 7 a.m. Those who are planning to sell are asked to place a sign or a flag in your yard to let folks know you are open for business.
Shoppers are invited to come out and explore, shop, support the Lake community, and find your next treasure. The fourth annual event will span from Jefferson Road, Flemington, Lake Shore Drive, Canal Cove Road, Waccamaw Shores, and the whole Wooded Acres neighborhood. Updated details will be posted to the Lake Waccamaw Community Information Page on Facebook.
For those who would like to set up to sell at the yard sale, but don’t have the space or room, the Lake Waccamaw Depot is offering spots on their lawn for a $20 donation to the facility. Proceeds will help support exhibits, programs, and preservation in the local community.
Folks are invited to show up at 7 a.m. on Sept. 7, pay for your space, and sell your items throughout the day. The museum is located at 205 Flemington Drive at the Lake.
A salute to tiny-winged heroes is upon us once again as the annual North Carolina Honey Festival in Whiteville takes over downtown on Saturday, Sept. 12, beginning at 10 a.m. to celebrate National Honey Month. The mission of the North Carolina Honey Festival is to highlight the significance of bees in the environment, celebrate honey and honey products, encourage bee-friendly practices, and promote beekeeping in all of North Carolina’s regions.
Vendors and product exhibitors will be set up with a variety bee-related items, ranging from raw local honey to beeswax candles, meads, skincare and hair products, bee pollen, honey-sweetened sauces and desserts. Whiteville was selected to host the festival as an official ‘bee city’, because of its growing beekeeping community. Food trucks, community groups, and the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences will be set up throughout the day.
Honeybees and other pollinators are essential to the environment. Between 75 and 95 percent of all flowering plants on the earth need help with pollination. Pollinators provide services to over 180,000 different plant species and more than 1,200 crops. That means that one out of every three bites of food required pollination at some stage of growth.
Get ready for an exciting day at the Car and Bike Club Show on Sept. 12, from 2–5 p.m. at East Columbus High School. This “Swamp Thing” event invites car and bike clubs to bring their rides and compete for a variety of awards, including King of the Swamp Bike, King of the Swamp Car, Best Classic/Antique, Best Modern, Loudest/Best Sound on the Swamp, Best Paint, and People’s Choice.
Registration is donation-based and will be from 1–2:30 p.m. Winners will be announced at 4:45 p.m. Guests can enjoy music, food, cars and motorcycles, and vote for their favorite ride. All proceeds will go to the East Columbus basketball and track programs. Vendors are welcome to set up for a $40 donation. A signed waiver and clean area are required to participate. The Family Birthing Center at Columbus Regional Healthcare System is inviting expectant mothers in their third trimester and their partners to attend birthing classes at the facility. Space is limited, but they will accommodate all interested participants.
The class will include topics like what to expect during your birth experience, the benefits of breastfeeding and how to be successful, a tour of the center, and a meet and greet with the staff. Refreshments will be served at each session.
The event is free, and each session will run from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Classes are scheduled for the following dates:

- Nov. 14
- Dec. 12

PFT & Transport, Big Wills Auto, Woodyard Transport, Scotts Enterprises, and Kayden Enterprises will be hosting the first Annual Autism Day on Sept. 19 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in Chadbourn. There will be games, food, pets, and lots of fun.
The event will be sensory-friendly, but all children are welcome to attend. Autism Day will be held at 203 South Brown Street.
