Here’s today’s Bottom Line
A significant roaring thunderstorm Saturday evening brought about an inch and a third of rainfall to the city of Whiteville. Rainfall amounts varied significantly across the county. There were areas of wind damage reported throughout Columbus county. Elizabethtown reported a 60-mph wind gust, and a 72-mph gust was reported in Fayetteville. Take all severe thunderstorm warnings seriously!
The trigger for this mesoscale convective system (fancy meteorological terminology for a squall line) is a cold front that has moved through the area.
A “shortwave” disturbance will pinwheel around the base of a deep trough extending from southern Canada. This will bring the potential for additional showers and storms this afternoon into the evening. The southern half of the county is under a level 1 out of 5 risk for severe storms once again.
Then… that’s it. Dry weather (with much lower humidity values) will settle in for Labor Day and Tuesday. We’ll wake up early Tuesday with temps in the mid 60s — indeed it’s going to feel very nice outside.
Unfortunately the cooler weather doesn’t stick around. High pressure flexing muscle will bring additional heat/humidity to the area. Thunderstorm chances return late Friday as the next frontal system attempts to push into the area.
TROPICS: No Atlantic tropical activity is anticipated over the next 7-10 days.
