A possible waterspout sent boaters fleeing for cover near Lynn’s Place on Lake Waccamaw this afternoon.
The apparent funnel cloud turned water feature was just outside the no wake line, said a Patrick Davenport. Boaters and patrons of the store and dock saw the spout around 4:40 p.m. and sought cover.
Waterspouts are formed in the same manner s tornadoes, and can be just as dangerous.
The spout was quickly covered by the heavy rain, Davenport.
“I’m not sure ie if made to the landing,” he said.
Jordan Baker of the National Weather Seevice Wilmington office said they had received no reports of the water spout, but Lake Waccamaw is big enough and the winds just strong enough to produce a short lived one.
More than two inches of rain was recorded at Meteorologist Christopher Cawley’s weather station in Whiteville as of 5 p.m., on top of more than an inch Saturday.
