DELWAY—Demetrius Dexter ran for a touchdown and 129 yards as the Gators defeated Union in football on Friday night.With the win, East Columbus ended a three-game losing streak.
In the first half, both teams struggled to move the ball, resulting in a scoreless tie at the half. With 5:47 remaining in the third quarter, the Gators struck first with a Demetrius Dexter touchdown. Dexter added the two-point conversion to put the Gators ahead 8-0.
The Spartans didn’t waste time retaliating as Marquavion Melvin took the kickoff 85 yards to cut the lead to 8-6. Union failed on the two-point conversion.
Early in the fourth quarter, Christian Norton found the endzone with a 21-yard rush. The Gators failed on the two-point conversion with 11:12 remaining in the game for 14-6 advantage.
The Gators’ defense kept Union out of the endzone for the remainder of the game to make the final score East Columbus 14, Union 6. The win moved East Columbus to 1-1 in the Carolina Conference and 3-3 on the season.
Union falls to 0-1 in the conference and 3-2 on the season.
Union’s Tobias Cromartie rushed for 88 yards and Marquavion Melvin had 116 all-purpose yards on the night.
East Columbus will host county-rival West Columbus (0-2, 1-4) on Friday for homecoming. Union will travel to Hobbton (1-1, 1-5) the same night.
