With Veterans Day on Nov. 11, a number of groups are getting a headstart on the holiday.
South Columbus High School will host its veterans program Friday at 10 a.m. The public is welcome.
Saturday at 10 a.m. is the Veterans Parade through downtown Whiteville. The parade is part of the Whiteville Pecan Harvest Music Festival, which will also have special events for veterans throughout the day.
On Sunday, Nakina Baptist Church will hold a patriotic-themed worship service at 11 a.m., followed by a chicken bog fundraiser luncheon at 12:15 p.m.
Lineup for the Nakina Veterans Day Parade begins at 1 p.m. A special ceremony honoring all veterans is set for 1:30 p.m., followed by the [parade at 2 p.m.
The Veterans Memorial Park will host the annual Veterans Day service at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, Veterans Day. All veterans are welcome to enjoy a meal after the service.
The Park will host its inaugural Veterans Fall Rally on Nov. 14. Vendors, a veterans stand down, a cruise-in and motorcycle rally are scheduled.
Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, marking the end of the First World War at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918. It was later changed to Veterans Day to honor all living veterans who served in peacetime or war.
