An overturned Mercedes Benz with “multiple” bullet holes was found in a ditch near Whiteville Wednesday, according to the sheriff’s office. The vehicle also had suspected narcotics inside.

Deputies and the Highway Patrol responded after a 911 call about the vehicle. The Mercedes was in a ditch along Mill Pond Road near the city.

First responders initially suspected the occupant had been ejected, but a search of the area turned up no signs of anyone. The vehicle had been hit by numerous gunshots, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies found “off white powder” and a “white rock like substance” in the vehicle, the report said.

The vehicle and suspected narcotics were taken into evidence.

It is not known if the car’s occupants were somehow connected to the shooting incident on Burkhead Street on Thursday. Two homes were struck but no one was injured in that case.

The sheriff’s office and Highway Patrol are investigating the overturned car, and Whiteville Police are seeking information about the Burkhead Street shooting.
