Deputies have arrested the man who allegedly shot a Swamp Fox Highway resident while a bedridden family member was in the home.

Jacques Ali Vereen, 26, was taken into custody Friday on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, and attempted first degree murder. His bond was set at $500,000. Vereen gave his address as 1309 Clyde Norris Rd., Tabor City.

The sheriff’s office was called to a home in the 1000 block of Swamp Fox Highway around 10 p.m. Friday after a 911 caller asked for help, then hung up. First responders and deputies found blood inside and outside a rear door, and checked the house. They found one individual who was bedridden inside, but that person wasn’t injured.

Upon further investigation, detectives discovered that Vereen had allegedly shot Steven Best “in the head area” with a handgun and fled the scene. Best was transported by private vehicle to a hospital in South Carolina with serious injuries.

This story is developing. The investigation is continuing.
