Saturday shooting sends one to hospital

One man is in critical condition after a shooting Saturday night in Whiteville.

Det. Sgt. Scott Moody said Whiteville Police were called to West Lewis Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard at 8:58 p.m. after a call about shots being fired in the area. Officers found Demez Thompson suffering from a gunshot wound.
Thompson was transported to New Hanover Regional, where he is listed in critical condition, Moody said.

The Lewis Street area has been the location of numerous calls over the past year for shots fired and drug-related incidents.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Det. Michael Strickland at 642.5111.
