September 28, 1951 ~ July 7, 2021 (age 69)
Mrs. Betty Engen Faircloth 69, of Myrtle Beach, SC, formerly of Whiteville & Lake Waccamaw passed on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at her home. She was born September 28, 1951 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late William Eugene Engen and Leola Summersett Engen.
After earning her masters degree in education, she taught in the Whiteville City School system. She was an excellent educator, who focused on quality education for all children, and enjoyed sharing her expertise in grammar and Shakespearean literature. Betty had and expert knowledge of the holocaust and was humbled in sharing that knowledge with her students. She was honored when her quilt was placed in the National Cathedral Holocaust Museum. After a teaching career of 39 years, she retied and put her skills to work advocating for the children at Boys & Girls Home of North Carolina at Lake Waccamaw, where she was her husband, Gary’s right hand until his retirement. She was active in the Whiteville Civitan Club and served as secretary of the Lake Waccamaw Lions Club.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Gary Faircloth; two sons, William Bradley Faircloth of Asheville and Travis Faircloth and wife, Lindsay of Little River, SC; four grandchildren, Abigail Faircloth, Colbie Faircloth, Ally Austin and Bella Austin; a brother, Dr. Bill Engen and wife, Debbie of Newberry, SC; a sister, Carol Edwards and husband, Rodney of Whiteville; nieces and nephews, Avery, Casey, Landon, Matt and Jessica.
Her funeral service will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Mark Fisher, Rev. Bruce Sheeks and Rev. Wallyce Todd officiating.
Her family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 pm Friday, July 9, 2021 at Peacock Funeral Home.
