12/15/21 SPORTS WRAP-UP 

NBA : The NBA takes the top spot today. There is a new 3-point record holder, and his name is Steph Curry. He now holds the record at 2974 3-point shots made, surpassing Ray Allen who held the record for almost a decade. 

Former NBA Champion and player J.R. Smith earned a 4.0 grade-point average in his first semester at North Carolina A&T State University. In case you didn’t already know, Smith also joined the University’s golf team as a walk on. Things are going good for JR, he states “I can’t even describe the feeling, I aint even gonna lie. A lot of hard work went into that **** you know…”. Smith also added he is excited to play golf and looks forward to the challenge.  

League play last night, the Golden State Warriors beat the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden 105-96. Seth Curry set the all-time record for 3-pointers in this game. 

The Brooklyn Nets got the OT win against the Toronto Raptors 131-129. 

The Phoenix Suns also win in overtime, as they take care of the Portland Trailblazers 111-107. 

Detroit at Chicago was postponed due to Covid-19 concerns. A few Bulls games already had to be postponed due to the same reason. 

The Charlotte Hornets are in San Antonio tonight. This game tips off at 8:30pm. 

ESPN has a double header tonight. The Lakers are in Dallas with a 7:30pm start. The Utah Jazz host the Los Angeles Clippers following that game. 

NHL: Amongst Covid concerns the Carolina Hurricanes game versus the Wild had to be postponed. The NHL already announced the postponement of several Calgary Flames games through December 16, 2021, due to Covid. The Hurricanes played the Flames December 9, 2021, during their 4 game Canada trip. No confirmation yet if the Hurricanes game tomorrow night is postponed against the Detroit Redwings. 

NFL: Week 15 action kicks off with the 9-4 Kansas City Chiefs heading into San Diego to face the 8-5 Chargers. This game is on FOX with a 8:20pm kick-off.  

There is Saturday football this week on the NFL Network. The Las Vegas Raiders at the Cleveland Browns at 4:30pm and the late game is the New England Patriots versus the Indianaoplis Colts at 8:20pm. 

The Carolina Panthers are in Buffalo to face the Bills. This game is on FOX at 1pm on Sunday. 

NCAA: Last night in men’s basketball the Blue Devils increased their record to 8-3, as they make easy work of South Carolina State. Duke beat the Bulldogs 103-62. AJ Griffen led Duke scorers with 19 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Paolo Banchero led in rebounds and assists. He finished with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. 

Duke is back in action tomorrow night as they host Appalachian State at 7pm on ESPN2. 

The Tarheels also made it look easy at they bullied Furman 74-61. North Carolina was led by a pair of double-doubles. Dawson Garcia had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists and Armando Bascot had 14 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists. RJ Davis also had a good game leading the Tarheels in assists. He finished with 6 points, 3 rebounds and 7 assists. 

The 9-1 UCLA squad comes to town, as the 7-2 Tarheels host the Bruins Saturday afternoon on CBS. Coverage starts at 3pm 

LOCAL SPORTS: Boys Varsity basketball action returns tonight. The Whiteville Wolfpack travels to Purnell Swett. 7:30pm start scheduled. 

East and South Columbus High Schools are also on the road this week. Tomorrow night South Columbus looks for their first win of the season in Loris and the East Columbus Gators face a tough 7-2 Warriors team of Southeastern Christian Academy. 

Girls Varsity hoops also return tonight, as the Lady wolfpack also head into Purnell Swett. This game has a 6pm start scheduled.  

The Lady Stallions of South Columbus are also still looking for their first win of the season. They head to Loris tomorrow night.
