01/02/22 Sports Wrap Up

NCAA: Men’s Football
Five Bowl Games yesterday, but only one worth talking about. First here is the final score of the other games.

The Outback Bowl Penn State loses 24-10 to Arkansas.

The Fiesta Bowl  Oklahoma State comes back to defeat Notre Dame 37-35.

The Citrus Bowl  Iowa falls 20-17 to the Kentucky Wildcats.

The Sugar Bowl Baylor Bears 21-7 over the Ole Miss Rebels. Ole Miss quarterback, Matt Corral,  left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury. He returned to the  sideline on crutches before halftime to support his team. He will have more  tests today. Corral was originally going to sit the game out with fellow seniors to  avoid injury before the upcoming NFL combine and draft.

Rose Bowl Ohio State Buckeyes against the Utha did not disappoint anyone but Utes fans.  In a game that broke many FBS and Ohio State school records, the Buckeyes  came out on top 48-45. In a game that had Utah leading 35-12 at halftime, it did  not seem like the Utes were going to have any problems controlling the second  half. The Buckeyes had another idea, they came out scored a quick touchdown  and then held Utah to a field goal. That brought Ohio back into the game to 38- 28 and gave them the momentum going into the fourth quarter. The game was  tied at 45, with under two minutes left and Ohio State with the ball. They  controlled the clock and moved the ball 56 yards down the field and hit a 19- yard field goal with nine seconds left on the clock. Buckeyes come from behind  and win in Rose Bowl style, 48-45 over Utah. This game obviously had 93  combined points and an unbelievable 1,146 combined total yards. Ohio’s  quarterback, C.J. McCloud, finished the game with 573 passing yards and six  touchdowns. Buckeye sophomore wide receiver, Jaxon Smith Njigba , set school  and FBS records with an outstanding performance. Jaxon set the record with 15  catches and 347 yards and three touchdowns.

In other NCAA college football news. North Carolina Tarheel quarterback Sam Howell will skip his senior year and declares himself eligible for the NFL draft.

NBA: The Hornets face the Phoenix Suns at the Spectrum Center at 7pm tonight.

NHL: The Carolina Hurricanes take 49 shots on goal, compared to the Blue Jackets 18 shots and defeat Columbus 7-4 at the Nationwide Arena. The most amazing part of the Carolina win was the five goals in the third period competing the comeback victory. The Hurricanes had goals by Steven Lorentz (2), Brady Skjei (2), Nino Neiderreiter, Andre Svecknikov and Ethan Bear. The Hurricanes are now 21-7-1 on the season and sit in first place in the Metropolitan division.

The Carolina game tomorrow night against the Maple Leafs has already been postponed due to Covid-19 concerns with the Toronto team. The Hurricanes return to the ice Thursday night, Dec7, they will host the Calgary Flames at PNC Arena at 7pm.

NFL: Sad news in the NFL world. Former Dallas Cowboys running back, and Head Coach Dan Reeves passes away at the age of 77. He was part of the NFL for 38 seasons in one way or another. Reeves had nine Super Bowl appearances, the third most overall individual appearances of all time. He is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart Pam, three children and six grandchildren. Dan Reeves has had health problems for a long time and died from complications due to Dementia. He passed away in his bed, at his home in Atlanta. His family was by his side.

The Carolina Panthers faces the New Orleans saints today at 4:25pm. Both teams are out of the playoffs.

NBC’s Sunday night’s game is the Minnesota Vikings against the Green Bay Packers. The Packers sit in the number one seed with a 12-3 record. Weather still looks like it will be the “Coldest Conditions of the Season.” The temperature for game time is expected to be below zero.

Monday night is the Cleveland Browns versus Pittsburgh on ESPN/ABC at 8:15pm.
