01/03/22 Sports Wrap Up 

NBA: The Hornets got manhandled last night by Phoenix, 133-99. The Suns came into the Spectrum Center and stopped the three-game winning streak of Charlotte. Devon Booker led all scorers with 24 points, he also added 7 rebounds and 3 assists to help the Suns make easy work of the Hornets. Seven players had double digit points for Phoenix. LaMelo Ball led the Charlotte scores with 17 points. Ball also added 3 rebounds and an assist. Gordon Hayward had 8 points, 3 assists and led the Hornets in rebounds with 7. Ish Smith led the team in assists with 8, he also had 13 points and 2 rebounds. 

The Hornets are back at it tonight as they go to D.C. to face the Wizards at 7pm. 

Around the rest of the NBA last night 

The Raptors over the New York Knicks 120-105 in Toronto. 

Cavaliers defeat the Indiana Pacers 108-104 in Cleveland. 

The Miami Heat lose a close one 115-113 to the Kings in Sacramento. 

116-111 was the final in Boston, as the Celtics beat the Orlando Magic. Jalen Brown had a double-double, led all scorers and had his first 50-point game of his career. Brown also had a team leading 11 rebounds and 4 assists to help Boston get the win in overtime. 

The Dallas Mavericks defeats the Thunder 95-86 in Oklahoma. Bright news for Thunder fans, rookie Josh Giddey made NBA history with the youngest player to get a triple double. 19 years and 84 days is now the age to beat. Giddey took the record from Charlotte Hornet LaMelo Ball, who was 19 years and 140 days old when he set the record almost a year ago on Jan 9, 2021. 

At the Staple Center last night, the Lakers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 108-103. LeBron James led the Los Angeles squad in points, rebounds and assists. James tallied 26 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in the win. 

 

NHL: The Carolina Hurricanes game tonight against the Toronto Maple Leaf’s and the Minnesota Wild versus Ottawa Senators, have been postponed due to Covid-19 concerns. The Hurricanes return to the ice Thursday night, Dec 7th, they will host the Calgary Flames at PNC Arena at 7pm.

The New York Rangers shut out the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-0 at Madison Square Garden. 

The San Jose Sharks lose to the Penguins 8-5 in Pittsburgh. 

Boston Bruins wins in Detroit, defeating the Red Wings 5-1. 

The Washington Capitals loses at home in overtime to the New Jersey Devils 4-3. 

The Anaheim Ducks go into Colorado and lost to the Avalanche 4-2. 

Winnipeg Jets win in overtime against the Las Vegas Golden Knights 5-4. 

The Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Calgary Flames and lost 5-1. 

The Arizona Coyotes versus the Dallas Stars game was postponed due to Covid-19 last night. 

 

NFL: Tonight, it is the Cleveland Browns versus Pittsburgh on ESPN/ABC at 8:15pm. 

The story from yesterday was the meltdown of Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown during the middle of the game with the New York Jets. The incident caught on many different devices and platforms shows Antonio Brown removing his jersey and pads. He then tosses them onto the bench in disgust. Most of his teammates watched on in amazement and shock. Brown then proceeded to stroll leisurely through the end zone and give the peace sign or “deuces,” signifying he was out of there and done. On his way-out Antonio Brown was reported to have asked the local police officers for a ride to the airport, he was refused and then continued to the locker room and finished getting dressed. Brown did not leave with the team on their chartered flight. After the game Tampa Bay Head Coach Bruce Arians was asked about the Brown and the incident, his response was “He is no longer a Buc, let’s talk about the players that played hard….” There have been rumors floating around numerous broadcasts that Brown was close to receiving performance-based bonuses and was benched, Coach Arians states he did not bench Antonio Brown before the incident.

Tampa Bay comes back to beat the New York Jets 28-24. 

The Cincinatti Bengals pull off a shocker and defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 34-31. 

The New York Giants lost to the Chicago Bears 29-3. 

The Philadelphia Eagles lock in a playoff spot beating the Washington Football Team 20-16. 

The Baltimore ravens lost a close one at home 20-19 to the Los Angeles Rams. 

The Las Vegas Raiders win in Indy against the Colts 23-20. 

The New England Patriots hang 50 on the Jacksonville Jaguars. Final score 50-10. 

Bills 29-15 over the Falcons. 

The Miami Dolphins winning streak stops at seven games and they fall short of the playoffs, losing 34-3 to the Tennessee Titans. 

The 49ers beat the Texans 23-7 in San Francisco. 

Chargers 34-14 over the Denver Broncos in San Diego. 

The Seatle Seahawks put up 51 points at home against the Detroit Lions, winning 51-29 

The Arizona Cardinals pulled off the unexpected win in Dallas against the Cowboys, 25-22. 

Last night the Green Bay packers locked in the number one seed in the NFL beating the Minesota Vikings in a battle on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field 37-10. 

NCAA: Men’s Football The last bowl game before the National Championship on Jan 10, is the Texas Bowl tomorrow night at 9pm. It features the Kansas State Wildcats versus the LSU Tigers. 

National Championship Game will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Jan 10 and will be nationally televised. Number one ranked Alabama Crimson tide will face the number three ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Both teams have a 13-1 record. The Bulldogs look to avenge their only loss of the season from Dec 4, 2021. That game was a 41-24 loss to Alabama. 

LOCAL SPORTS: Varsity Boys 

East Columbus kicks off the action this week as the Gators host Wilmington Christian Academy tonight at 7:30pm 

West Brunswick goes to West Columbus tomorrow night. Tip-off is 7:30pm 

Whiteville returns to action Thursday afternoon at 4pm as they travel to Fairmont. 

South Columbus returns to action on Jan 11 against the Pender Patriots. The Stallions are 0-13 and look to get their first win of the season against a 1-3 Pender team. 

 

Girls Varsity Basketball 

The Lady Gators kick things off this week against Wilmington Christian Academy this afternoon at 5:15pm. East Columbus also faces an 0-8 Red Springs team tomorrow at 5pm. 

Tomorrow the West Brunswick Lady Trojans will travel into West Columbus to take on the Lady Vikings at 6pm. 

The Lady Wolfpack of Whiteville are back in action Thursday at 6pm in Fairmont. 

The 10-0 East Bladen Lady Eagles will also be in action Thursday as they face the 0-5 Lady Vikings of West Columbus at 6pm. 

East Columbus and South Brunswick wrap up Thursday’s local girls varsity schedule.
