After Tuesday’s thunderstorms postponed play, the Whiteville Wolfpack hosted Trask again Wednesday and carried the WHS winning streak to 12 games with a 4-2 victory
The Wolfpack moved to 14-3 on the season and now sits in first place, with a 7-0 conference record.
Ashton Hammonds was the starting pitcher for the Wolfpack, and he pitched six strong innings giving up only two runs in the second inning before finding his groove. Hammonds would end the game with eight strikeouts. Ty Lawson made his first appearance as a closer this season and came in the seventh inning and struck out the side.
Kyler Dowless manufactured a run when he got a walk to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning. Dowless would steal second and then score when Trask pitcher, Connor Gore, attempted to pick off Kyler at second.
The shortstop mishandled the throw and it rolled into the outfield. The centerfielder tried to pick up the ball and dropped it. That gave Dowless plenty of time to score from second base with some aggressive base running.
Will Fisher would single through the middle and then score on an RBI sacrifice fly by Sam Inman. Bud Baldwin singled to centerfield to start the bottom of the fifth inning. Dowless would then hit a hard chopper over the third baseman’s head. Ty Lawson would single through the middle scoring both Baldwin and Dowless, bringing the final score to 4-2.
Trask will be looking for some revenge when Whiteville travels to Wilmington Friday evening. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and pregame coverage starts at 5:45 p.m. on Kool 103.9-FM.
