It was a rude awakening for a Tabor City area man who took a nap after he and a second suspect allegedly broke into an outbuilding.

Shykem Lavonce Newman, 19, and Joseph Jarame Stephens, 20, were arrested early Monday after a call about a breaking and entering in progress, according to the sheriff’s office. The caller said no one had permission to be in the building at 261 Pine Circle Drive. The deputy who responded found a door open on an outbuilding around 2:30 a.m., the report said.

As he opened the door, the deputy heard a man inside, and called to him to come out. Newman allegedly tossed a bag of pot to one side as he was being taken into custody.

Stephens, the second individual, was on a chair completely covered in a sheet, the report said. The deputy spoke to him several times before Stephens awakened. An AR-15 rifle, scales and crack cocaine were in close proximity to the chair. A bookbag contained more baggies of heroin and crack, the report said.

Stephens was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine, heroin and marijuana; trafficking in opiates; breaking and entering, and drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $110,000. He listed addresses on Pine Circle Drive, Tabor City and Loris, S.C. on arrest documents.

Newman was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine and heroin; trafficking in opiates; and breaking and entering. His bond was set at $110,000. His address was listed as 434 Pine Circle Dr., Tabor City.
