Additional deputies were put in place at West Columbus High School at Cerro Gordo today after an alleged threat of a mass shooting.

The sheriff’s office reported that someone made the threat Wednesday. The CCSO reported that there was a threat to “shoot up” the school. The threat was sent to the sheriff’s office by a person who received it via Instagram.

The school announced the report of the threat via its official Facebook page Wednesday evening.

“We, along with law enforcement are investigating a social media threat that was posted this afternoon,” the post said. “Law enforcement has already been actively pursuing investigative tips and visiting homes. There will be extra law enforcement on our campus tomorrow to ensure the safety and security of all students.”

A number of parents posted on social media that they were keeping their children out of school today due to the threat.

The investigation is continuing.
