Warrant: Suspect Tried to Take Deputy’s Weapon

Multiple charges were filed against a Tabor City area man who allegedly tried to steal a detective’s handgun during a fight.

Donald Zane Russ, 34, is under a $212,500 secured bond in the Columbus County detention Center. He is charged with assaulting an officer, resisting an officer, maintaining a  vehicle for drug activities, attempted common law robbery, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also charged with failure to appear. His address was listed as 9836 Joe Brown Hwy. S., Tabor City.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon, according to the report. Warrants show that Russ refused to exit his Ford truck during a traffic stop, when Det. M. Corder attempted to arrest him for outstanding warrants. Russ fought with Corder, “causing lacerations on his right arm”, the warrant said.

Russ is also alleged to have tried to take Corder’s service weapon, a Glock 9mm.

Warrants show that a small quantity of marijuana, a syringe and a plastic baggie used to store drugs were found in the vehicle.
