A farmworker was seriously injured Monday (today) when his leg was caught in an auger at Byrd Farms in Hallsboro.

Chief Joe Tyler of the Hallsboro Fire Department said Joseph Hutt was trying to clear the grain in the auger when the machine trapped his leg. Firefighters had to remove the grain from the bin, then cut the auger bit loose and send it to the hospital with Hutt, Tyler said.

“He just slipped while he was working on it,” Tyler said.

Six personnel worked to remove Hutt from the grain bin and get him into the ambulance. He was rushed into emergency surgery at New Hanover Regional.

The accident occurred at Byrd Farms on Giles Byrd Road. Hallsboro was assisted by Lake Waccamaw Fire-Rescue and Whiteville Rescue Unit.
