The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville is exploring the stars in the sky, the insects in the air, and everything on land during August. Check out ancient insects, bees, and space as the museum walks you through all aspects of nature with pop-ups, ecoEXPLORE, and Storytime activities.
Playspace Pop-Up
Join museum staff on Thursday, Aug. 10, at 10:30 a.m. for a Playspace Pop-up. Can you move like your favorite animal? Let’s learn how various creatures move and why at this month’s Nature PlaySpace. This program is best suited for ages 4–8 years old and is weather-dependent.
Second Saturday Storytime
Join the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences (NCMNS) in Whiteville for Second Saturday Storytime on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 10:30 a.m. Staff will be reading and speaking about bees. A nature-related activity will follow. This program is for kids ages 2–5 years old, but all are welcome. Second Saturday Storytime is sponsored by the Columbus Council of North Carolina Reading Association in partnership with the NCMNS. The event is held every second Saturday of each month at the museum.
Thursday Storytime
If you miss Second Saturday Storytime, you’ll get the opportunity to attend Thursday Storytime on Aug. 17 at 10:30 a.m. This program is held every third Thursday of the month. Museum staff will be reading at story about the stars and space and an out of this world crafting activity will follow. Children ages 2-5 years old are invited to attend, but book-lovers of any age are encouraged to join in on the fun.
Movies on Madison
An ordinary LEGO construction worker, thought to be the prophesied as “special”, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the LEGO universe into eternal stasis. ‘The Lego Movie’ will be the feature film for the next Movies on Madison on Friday, Aug. 18, at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville. The museum lawn will open at 7:30 p.m. for activities, and the movie will begin at dusk. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase. This is a family event, so no coolers, pets, alcoholic beverages, or smoking is allowed on the facility grounds. Admission is free.
Play in the Sand
Head over to the museum on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 10:30 a.m. and hang out at the Nature PlaySpace to learn about sand, what it is, and why it’s important for the environment. This program is best suited for ages 4–8 years old and is weather-dependent. No registration is required.
Ancient Insects
This month’s ecoEXPLORE program will be about ancient insects. This virtual experience is for children 5-13 years, but all are welcome to attend. Entomology Summit
The NCMNS will be having a celebration of insects. Participants will explore the museum’s entomology bug collection, then you’ll learn how to make your own. This program is for kids ages 5–13.
