Pedestrian Dies in Sandyfield Crash

A Sandyfield woman became the county’s 11th highway death Saturday when she stepped into the roadway at the intersection of N.C. 11 and N.C. 87.

Sgt. K. McVicker of the Highway Patrol said Shirley Fogle, 78, apparently walked out from behind a vehicle on N.C. 11 into the path of a westbound car on N.C. 87. No one in the car was injured, but an infant was transported to hospital to be checked out, according to Acme Delco Riegelwood Fire Chief Steve Camlin. Fogle was pronounced dead on the scene.

The crash occurred near Fogle’s home.

Deputies and rescue were called to the area around 8:30 p.m. on a report of people arguing, Camlin said. Officers were still on the scene when Fogle apparently stepped backward into traffic around 9 p.m., Camlin said.

No charges will be filed in the crash, McVicker said.
