The Good News for Oct. 6

The temperatures may be falling but the activities are picking up in Columbus County for the first of October.

Gates open at the 43rd Annual Columbus County Agricultural Fair Tuesday at the fairgrounds. Monday at 4 will be the big fair parade through downtown Whiteville. Jimmy Kirk, known to many as the friendliest man in town, is parade marshal this year. He’s sporting new boots given to him by Whiteville High School. The fair runs through Oct. 15. Yard sale bargain hunters have two big opportunities this weekend. Tabor City and Fair Bluff will have their community yard sales starting at 8 a.m. Resellers, food booths, arts and crafts and more will be available at both locations. Tabor City Fire Department will be selling chili dog and cheeseburger combos at the Depot during the market.

October is a big month at the Columbus Community Farmers Market. This week will feature smoked pork sandwiches and smoked corn on the cob. Vendors will also have jams, jellies, bread, spices, soaps, goat’s milk soap, and more. There’s always room for more vendors at the market, too. Anything that is made or grown at home can be sold at the market. Call 840.6743.

Williams Township Class of 1991 is getting together on Oct. 14  at 6 p.m. at the Chef and the Frog. Classmates, Teachers and Staff from Williams Township are welcome. For more information contact Lynne Hewett at the Nautilus or Angela Norris.

The Kevin Conner Memorial Run is Oct. 14 in downtown Whiteville. Volunteers are needed for the event. Check out their Facebook page to see how you can help.

Transformation Church will hold a flounder fish plate sale Oct. 14 from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Plates are $12 and include flounder, slaw, hushpuppies, and fried sweet potatoes.  Drinks will be $1. The sale will be at 9955 James B. White Hwy. South. All proceeds go to the church building fund.

Mishop Springs Community Church will be having homecoming on October 22 with the service starting at 11 and meal following. Special singing by Daniel Ward.  The church is located at 2756 Pine Log Road Whiteville.

The sheriff’s office is collecting candy donations at the Whiteville and Delco locations. The candy will be handed out by deputies during trick or treat events. Call 642.6551 or just drop off a bag at either location.

All area churches are invited to come and join the community prayer event ‘Fields of Flags’ on Wednesday, Oct. 11, starting at 7 p.m. at Legion Stadium. The student-lead event invites youth to share and pray with their peers and challenge them to read the Bible and follow Jesus Christ. The stadium is at 1323 Chadbourn Avenue in Whiteville.

Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church will be having their ‘OktoberFest’ gospel and praise event on Oct. 21 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Contact Tonya Lennon at 910.234.1102. The cost for set up is $25. The church is at 5548 Silver Spoon Road in Whiteville.
