Filing begins Dec. 4 for what has been called one of the most pivotal election cycles in years.
With North Carolina’s primaries set for March 5, filing for the governor, lieutenant governor, all council of state positions, and multiple others begins at noon Dec. 4 and runs through noon on Dec. 15.
In Columbus County, four county commissioners seats will be up for election next year. Posts held by District Three Commissioner Giles “Buddy” Byrd, District Four Commissioner Laverne Coleman, District Two Commissioner Chris Smith, and District Five Commissioner Brent Watts are all on the ballot.
Candidates for N.C. House, N.C. Senate, and local offices are to file with their home county’s board of elections.
Candidates for state and U.S. offices who have officially filed their Notice of Candidacy with the state board with their county boards of election can file at the N.C. State Fairgrounds on Dec. 5, or the State Board of Elections office at other times.
Candidates who must file at the state level include:
- U.S. House of Representatives in Districts 1-14 (Columbus is in District Seven, and is represented by David Rouzer)
- Governor
- Lieutenant Governor
- Attorney General
- State Auditor
- Commissioner of Agriculture
- Commissioner of Insurance
- Commissioner of Labor
- Secretary of State
- Superintendent of Public Instruction
- State Treasurer
- N.C. Supreme Court Associate Justice (Seat 6)
- N.C. Court of Appeals Judge (Seats 12, 14, and 15)
- Superior Court Judge (various districts)
- District Court Judge (various districts)
