Several suspects apparently took advantage of an overdose Thursday to steal cash from a Whiteville Diner.

Whiteville Police were called to Jerry’s Sandwich Shop just after 4 p.m. Witnesses said a group of people came into the Madison Street eatery and sat down at the counter. One apparently overdosed, and while the customers and staff were trying to help the victim, the other suspects allegedly stole several hundred dollars from the till and fled the scene.

The overdose patient was treated with Narcan by emergency responders, and transported to Columbus Regional.

The investigation is continuing.
