The Good News for Dec. 16

It’s the last weekend before Christmas, and there is a lot going on. If you haven’t completed your Christmas shopping, you can get some unique and handmade gifts right here at home, but you have to hurry.

Chadbourn Baptist Church will host brunch with Santa Saturday at 10 a.m. There will be snacks, crafts, and free professional photos with Santa. The church is located at 504 North Howard Street.

Whiteville United Methodist Church will hold a huge yard sale from 7 until noon Saturday in the fellowship hall. The church is located at 902 Pinkney Street.

Columbus Christian Academy will host its Merry Christmas Market Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There’s no charge for admission. There will be local vendors, seasonal treats, and a silent auction.  Ray’s Seafood and Produce will be hosting a special Christmas event Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be a raffle and several drawings throughout the day. The event is sponsored in part by our buddy Lauren Wolff with Pretty Greens Microgreens. Call 910.899.6670 for more information.

Transformation Church will hold its last turkey shoot of the year Saturday at 7 p.m. Cost is five dollars a round. There will be food, hot chocolate and drinks. If there are 20 rounds, there will be a grand prize shootoff. The turkey shoot is held at 9955 James B. White Highway South, a mile from Williams Township school.

Olyphic Baptist Church, 19062 Seven Creeks Hwy., Tabor City, will host a live nativity Saturday from 6-8 p.m.

The Broadwell family of Bladen and Brunswick counties have been honored by the Wildlife Commission with the 2023 Lawrence Diedrick Small Game Award. The Broadwells own Orton Plantation as well as a large tract near Suggs Mill Pond. Both properties are considered the standard for woodland management, and are known for their growing populations of endangered woodpeckers and the largest Atlantic white cedar forest in the state.

The Real Whiteville Santa has opened his house on Smith Street beside Farm Bureau, near the courthouse. Santa is accepting visitors Wednesday through Saturday, 3:30 until 7 p.m., through December 23.

 Families First is offering assistance to clients aided by the agency this year. You can sponsor a child or a family for Christmas. Call 910.642.5996. Individuals and businesses are welcome.

The Carolyn High Memorial Library in Whiteville will have storytime with Santa Claus December 19 at 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Columbus Animal Protective Services will be closed Dec. 25-27 and Jan. 1.  The shelter will be operating on normal hours for adoptions and visiting animals. Workers will only be dispatched to emergency calls in the county during the holidays.

Work is underway for the first Hallsboro Community Christmas celebration December 23. There will be storytelling, hot chocolate, a singalong and more.
