An alleged burglary led to a fight with machetes Friday near Chadbourn.
Arias Onezimo, 36, of 51 Birchwood Trail, was held under $100,000 secured bond. He is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and first degree burglary.
Onezimo was allegedly fleeing from law enforcement when he broke into the home of Claudia Garcia at 67 Birchwood Trail around 10:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office reported.
Claudia Garcia, Malone Garcia Ramirez, Cesar Vezqez Lopez, and Marlyn Diana Vasquez Garcia were inside at the time.
Arias is alleged to have struck Claudia Garcia in the head with the machete, causing a severe injury and fracturing his skull. Arias then struck Cesar Vesquez Hernandez in the hand with the machete, causing a severe laceration.
One of the victims used a machete to defend the other family members, injuring Arias.
Garcia and Arias were both transported to Columbus Regional, then transferred to New Hanover. Garcia underwent surgery for his injuries. Their condition was unavailable.
