The Alliance for Cape Fear Trees, in partnership with Arbor Day Foundation’s Community Tree Recovery program and International Paper, will give away 900 trees at Riegelwood Baptist Church, 103 N.C. 87, Riegelwood, on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until noon, or as long as trees remain available.
The three-gallon trees are free to Cape Fear area residents and intended to replace trees damaged or destroyed by weather events and to replenish the area’s overall tree canopy.
The tree species available will include American Elm, Armstrong Red Maple, Brandywine Red Maple, October Glory Maple, Serviceberry, Dura Heat River Birch, American Holly Satyr Hill, Bracken’s Brown Beauty Magnolia, Little Gem Magnolia,, Swamp White Oak, Overcup Oak, and Nuttall Oak.
There is a limit of two trees per adult and species are subject to change depending on vendor availability. Residents who arrive early have a better chance of getting their preferred species. Photographs and information about the full selection, including soil and sun preference, can be found at www.acftrees.com. Arborists will also be onsite to answer questions about proper planting techniques.
“We are so grateful for our continued partnership with Arbor Day Foundation and their Community Tree Recovery program. This partnership alone has already delivered thousands of trees to Cape Fear area residents,” said Dan Camacho, executive director of the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees. This is International Paper’s second tree giveaway with ACFT. In 2022, the company sponsored a giveaway of 1,000 trees.
