The sheriff’s Office is asking for help locating a missing man. Jose Puentes, 62, was last seen near Sellerstown Road on Tuesday afternoon. He was wearing a black T-shirt, black jeans, boots, and a black hat with a Texas emblem. If you see the missing man, call the non-emergency number at 910.640.1428.

Sharmon Tolson of Whiteville has been arrested in a single charge of indecent liberties with a minor under 16 years of age. Tolson, age 71, was taken into custody Monday near his Canal Street home in Whiteville. He was released on a $10,000 secured bond.

A Wright Road couple was jailed on charges of simple assault and misdemeanor child abuse Friday. Matthew Blake Coker, age 36, and Sarah Barnes Coker, age 35, were arrested at their home in the 4700 block of Richard Wright Road. Matthew Coker was charged with misdemeanor child abuse, and Sarah Coker with two counts of simple assault. Deputies reported that Matthew Coker was supposed to be caring for a four year old child, but was intoxicated instead. Coker was found passed out in a bedroom with the child and a loaded handgun.

The first real cold snap of the year will move in Friday after some rain Thanksgiving Day. Temperatures will likely struggle to break 50 degrees after the rains, with 40s in the daytime and some 20s at night starting Friday.

The state Low Income Energy Assistance Program opens for applications Monday.
