Two pedestrians were seriously injured in separate incidents involving automobiles in less than 24 hours.
Lonnie Cardill is recovering after being struck by a car on Powell Boulevard near Hay Street Friday, Whiteville Police said. Cardill, 27, lives at a group home near where he was struck. He had apparently argued with a caregiver and led the home, according to police, when he darted into traffic near Hay Street around 6:45 p.m.
Cardill was transported to Columbus Regional and later transferred to New Hanover with non-life-threatening injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery.
A second pedestrian-car collision led to customers being asked to stay inside Tractor Supply Saturday evening during a busy shopping period.
Sgt. K. McVicker of the Highway Patrol said Tyrod McNeill, 23, was impaired, wearing dark clothing and walking in the roadway when he was struck on Slippery Log Road Saturday around 6:45 p.m. He was hit by a 2003 Ford automobile near Thompson Town Road. McNeill was airlifted from the Whiteville Tractor Supply Parking lot.
McVicker said McNeill was awake and talking to first responders when he was picked up.
No charges were filed in either case.
