Weather Update – Tuesday December 10, 2024

Hello everyone! Meteorologist Christopher Cawley here with your weather update for Tuesday December 10, 2024.

All in all today is going to be a nice day with a mix of clouds and sunshine, and southerly winds pushing our temps deep into the 70s. There is the chance for a few showers, particularly this morning, but overall rain amounts will be light today.

Then the main event comes tonight and Wednesday. Several mid-atmospheric weather disturbances will come together along a strong cold front, which will move through our area Wednesday afternoon. Showers will develop late Tuesday night and continue on Wednesday. There may be some gusty downpours on Wednesday. As I mentioned in detail on Monday’s report, the county will be under a “high shear low CAPE” environment, which means that, while there probably won’t be a much (if any) thunder and lightning, we do have a good potential for some “gusty showers” with heavy rainfall and sharp winds Wednesday afternoon.

The graphic here is the “future radar model” valid for 2 PM Wednesday. This is what the radar COULD look like.

Rainfall amounts for the county still appear to be around 1 inch which will help the drought conditions.

As for winds, there is the potential for some 30- to possibly 40-mph wind gusts from roughly mid-morning until about suppertime on Wednesday. Make sure those Christmas decorations are secure!

Winds make an abrupt shift to the west/northwest as the front passes — you’ll definitely feel a change as we go from warm south winds to cold northwest winds. Temperatures TUMBLE Wednesday night to around 30 by daybreak Thursday.

Strong high pressure of Canadian origin settles in bringing dry weather Thursday through Saturday. We’ll have colder-than-normal temps Thursday and Friday, but we warm up on Saturday ahead of the next weather system, which will likely bring rain chances Sunday/Monday (Dec 15/16). Long-range modeling suggests that temps from December 18-25 should be generally close to seasonable normal values.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you all have a fantastic day. Take care!
