Virginia Carolyn Steverson Nix

August 13, 1934 ~ January 3, 2025 (age 90)

Carolyn Steverson Nix, 90, died peacefully on January 3, 2025 at Brookdale Memory Care of Wilmington.

She was born in Springfield, S.C., on August 13, 1934 and was the daughter of the late Raymond Steverson and Rebecca Gossett Steverson White of Springfield, S.C. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, David Keene (D.K.) Nix, her brothers, Robert and Roger Steverson, and a sister Jan White Reyes. She is survived by her sister, Glenda Steverson Gurley (Wendell), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The Nixes had two daughters: Rebecca Nix High (Les) of Whiteville, N.C., and Angela Nix Morales (Bob) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and five grandchildren: Carly High McElwee (Nathan) of Raleigh, N.C., Margaret High of Chicago, Ill., Breland Morales Duderstadt (Michael) of Key West, Fla., Grace Morales of Tampa, Fla., and David Morales of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Carolyn met D.K. at the Savannah River nuclear plant near Barnwell, S.C., where they both worked. They married in 1954, then moved to Kinston, N.C., where he worked at DuPont and she raised their two children.

Carolyn was kind and had an easy smile for everyone. She was known in Kinston for her beautiful yard and for sewing. She volunteered with the schools and Girl Scouts and was beloved by the neighborhood children. She enjoyed colonial Williamsburg, where she frequently visited with friends and family, and reveled in collecting many things, including antiques, china, crystal, and Beanie Babies.

Carolyn and D.K. were inseparable. Family always came first, and they were adored by their five grandchildren. They were very active in their church in Kinston, Spilman Memorial Baptist Church, where Carolyn served her church in all capacities, including the youth group.

Carolyn and D.K. moved to Lexington, S.C., in 1988 to be closer to her mother and their large extended family. They joined the Coldwell Banker real estate office in Lexington and the two quickly became an effective team. Carolyn’s attention to detail was invaluable, and the Nixes were known for becoming lifelong friends with many of the young couples who moved to the fast-growing area.

They relocated to Wilmington in 2015 and eventually became residents of Brookdale, where they were always happy and enjoyed every minute of their time together as a couple. Carolyn had a giver’s heart that was full of love and gratitude, which made her a favorite of the staff and residents. The family is grateful for the warmth and care Carolyn and D.K. received at Brookdale and from Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at 1 p.m. at  Whiteville United Methodist Church, 902 Pinckney St., Whiteville, N.C., with the Rev. Howard James officiating.
