Fire departments from several counties responded Saturday and Sunday to a massive fire at the West Frazier sawmill in Riegelwood. Acme Delco Riegelwood Fire Rescue Chief Steve Camlin said the blaze was fanned by high winds. Called to the sawmill Saturday at 1:45 p.m. The first units to arrive reported multiple “large fires” in piles of scrap lumber, along with sawdust and chips.
Hundreds of acres are in flames in upstate South Carolina, just across the line from Columbus County. A number of area firefighters headed to Horry County, SC on Sunday to help with the Carolina Forest fire. Residents have been evacuated from a number of homes in the path of the fire.
Several hundred acres burned in Western Columbus County Thursday and Friday after a wildfire threatened several homes along Mangum Road. The Forest Service was still on scene hitting hotspots Saturday.
Columbus County Commissioners have a full agenda Monday night. In addition to public hearings on a planned duplex development and a proposed ordinance regulating campers, the board will consider a memorandum of understanding between the county and the sheriff’s office.
