Alice (Miller) Cooke

October 26, 1925 ~ April 19, 2025 (age 99)

Alice Miller Cooke, 99, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, in Augusta, Georgia.

Born October 26, 1925, in Chadbourn, she was the daughter of the late Carl Elmer Miller and Lula Edmund Miller. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Miller and Bill Miller, and her husband of 75 years, Hubert “Cookie” E. Cooke., Jr.

Alice graduated from Chadbourn High School and attended Elon University. On a weekend visit home from college, her parents introduced Alice to a young Coast Guard sailor they had become friends with while he was on beach patrol on Holden’s Beach. They were married on Christmas Eve in 1943. When Cookie returned from the Pacific following the War, they made their home in Chadbourn where they lived until 2017. That year, due to health issues, they moved to Augusta to be with their family.

In the early years of their marriage, Alice worked in a number of seasonal jobs with the peanut, potato, and tobacco markets as well as doing income tax preparation in an accounting office. Ultimately, she went to work full-time in the family business, Cooke’s Department Store, which they operated for 47 years.

Alice was a skilled seamstress and a wonderful cook who enjoyed sharing her talents with others. She was very active in her community and belonged to a number of civic organizations. A lifelong member of Chadbourn Presbyterian Church, Alice was an elder and  Sunday School teacher and served on many committees. She was devoted to her family and was happiest when she was spending time with them or doing things for them. We give thanks for her long and faithful life and for the joy she brought into the world.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Hubert and Barbara Cooke of Augusta, GA; her grandchildren Andy (Katelyn) Cooke of Augusta, GA, Beth (John Paul) Sellars of Lexington, SC, and Ben (Lori) Cooke of Augusta, GA; and great-grandchildren Miller, Mattox, Charlie, Rollin, Troupe, Matthew, and Luke.

A memorial service will take place on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Chadbourn Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
