The driver in a collision that closed Washington Street and JK Powell Blvd. in Whiteville for hours Sunday was shot to death. Jaquez Cribbs age 19 was killed around 9:00 a.m. Cribbs’s vehicle continued North on JK Powell Blvd. after he was shot and collided with a car heading West on Washington Street. Whiteville Police Chief Paul Rockenbach said the investigation is ongoing. JK Powell was blocked for several blocks while investigators processed the scene.
A downtown Whiteville venue was the site of an apparent melee Sunday morning. Whiteville Police were called to Fun-ctionz Venue and Lounge after shots were fired in the area. Two vehicles and the building sustained an estimated $4,000 in damages. No witnesses or victims were located. That investigation is continuing.
The Highway Patrol is investigating after an 18 wheeler struck a stopped moving van at the Hallsboro exit on U.S. 74 Monday morning. The pre-dawn wreck snarled traffic in the area for hours. The 18 wheeler burned, and the driver sustained minor injuries.
