A gathering at a downtown Whiteville business turned into a panic early Sunday morning.
Police are still trying to determine exactly what happened at Functionz Venue and Lounge at 910 South Madison Street. The business bills itself as a “performance and event venue” on its Facebook page, offering a location for family reunions, weddings and receptions, birthday parties and similar events.
Gunshots were reported in the area and in the adjacent Lewis Smith parking area. Investigators were on the scene into the predawn hours.
Whiteville Police Chief Paul Rockenbach said the incident is under investigation.
