Former sheriff’s Office Captain Kevin Norris has joined the race for the county’s top law enforcement officer.

Norris said in a Facebook post today (Thursday) that he is “deeply committed to making Columbus County a safer, stronger place to live, work and raise a family.”

Norris served with the sheriff’s office for 27 years.

“This election is about more than just me,” he wrote in the post. “It is about our community, our families, and our dedicated men and women of the Columbus county Sheriff’s Office.”

Norris said if he is elected he will “lead with honesty, transparency and accountability.”

He joins a busy field of candidates for the nomination for the sheriff’s post. Josh Harris bowed out of the race this week, but appointed Sheriff Bill Rogers, former Deputy Josh McPherson and Chadbourn Police Chief Ken Elliott have all announced bids for the office.

Filing begins in December for the March primary. All the candidates are Republicans. Currently no Democrat challengers have announced plans to run. The General Election is in November 2026.
