The Good News May 28-June 3 2025

It’s all about people helping people during the month of June as the community comes together for fundraisers, events, and even a good old-fashioned hoedown in Columbus County. Catch a movie, eat some ice cream, or put on your dancing shoes. There so much to step into over the summer. Let’s take a look at what’s going on near you.  

Columbus County Parks and Recreation has just opened up registration on May 26 for a free new program for kids this summer. The organization has launched the ‘Canoe Adventure’ at Lake Waccamaw State Park for young explorers on July 16 and Aug. 12 from 9-11 a.m. Participants ages 12-15 years old will paddle along the calm scenic waters of Lake Waccamaw while being guided by park staff. Spots are limited to 12 per session, and registration will remain open until the program is filled. Those interested can sign up by visiting www.parksrec.egov.basgov.com/columbusconc.  

Whiteville High School will be having a 50/50 fundraiser and ice cream pottery sale on Thursday, May 29, from 3:30-6 p.m. on the art room patio at the school. Folks can come by and pick out a handmade ceramic bowl to take home, fill it with ice cream, and eat their sweet treat for only $10. Proceeds from the event will go to support the Visual Arts Department and the Families First domestic violence shelter.  

The Southeastern Community Action Partnership will be hosting the Columbus County Resource Fair on Thursday, May 29, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The purpose of the fair is to showcase outreach programs and activities and to offer health information that the community may not be unaware of. The event will be set up at 155 Rec Drive in Whiteville.

Tabor City Police Department added another member to their ranks last week. Jordan Hucks, a former Horry County officer and South Carolina highway patrolman, was sworn in as a full-time officer for TCPD. Congratulations on your new position.  

 

The Whiteville Garden Club and the Columbus County Government will be holding the Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker and Memorial Park dedication ceremony on May 30 at 10 a.m. at the Courthouse Square in Whiteville. The Blue Star Memorials are a tribute to the members of the Armed Forces who have defended the United States of America.  

The NCMNS-Whiteville will be hosting Movies on Madison once again this summer. On May 30, children and their families are invited to bring a chair or blanket and sprawl out on the facility’s lawn to watch Disney’s live action version of “The Little Mermaid.” Come out to set up your seat and learn about underwater creatures before the movie begins. “The Little Mermaid” is rated PG and runs 135 minutes. This is a family-friendly event, so no pets, no coolers, and no alcohol or smoking permitted. Refreshments will be available for purchase. This event is made possible by the NC Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville and the Columbus County Arts Council. It is sponsored by the International Paper Foundation. The museum’s address is 415 South Madison Street. Future movie lineups for Movies on Madison include ‘Honey, I Shrunk the Kids’ on June 27 and ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ on July 25.  

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services will be having a free rabies clinic for pets on Saturday, May 31, from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. at 819 Farmers Union Road. The clinic is completely free and open to the public. Dogs and cats are welcome to come and get their one-year rabies shot.

Fair Bluff is adding another event to their First Saturday Market held each month. On June 7, the day will also include at livestock swap. Vendors will have eggs, chickens, goats, cows, ducks and more up for grabs for those wanting to expand their flocks and herds. The swap will run from 7-11 a.m. on Riverside Drive. For more information, call 910.833.4772. 

Graduation times and dates have been set for local high schools in Columbus County. East Columbus seniors will walk on June 7 at 3 p.m., South Columbus will hand out diplomas on June 7 at 10 a.m., and West Columbus will announce their class of 2025 on June 6 at 6 p.m. For those unable to attend their senior’s graduation ceremony, you can watch the livestream on the Columbus County Schools Facebook page.   

The Columbus Baptist Association needs your help to prepare for the arrival of Mission Serve. The group of over 300 teens and their youth leaders pay to come to Columbus County to volunteer their time and labor to the local community. The CBA needs donations of bottled water, Gatorade, and Powerade to distribute to the kids while they’re working out in the hot summer sun. Donations can be dropped off Monday-Wednesday from 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. at the association office located at 208 South Thompson Street in Whiteville. If you have a large number of items to donate, a pickup can be arranged by calling 910.642.2155. 

The Columbus County Farmers Market will be hosting the ‘Hoedown at Sundown’ event on Saturday, June 14, from 6-9 p.m. at the market location. The evening will include music, dancing, food and food trucks, games, a photo booth and more. The cost is $15 for couples, $10 for adults, and $5 for children 10 years old and under.  The CCFM can be found 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.
