
Take a breath and hold on to your hat folks. It’s going to be wild one this week in Columbus. Workshops, food, and fun are on the horizon, and many of these events will begin today. Activities for the whole family are rolling out the welcome wagon for this summer, and some area churches are already announcing their VBS dates. Grab an umbrella and plan accordingly as we march into this week’s Good News.

Tabor City had a grand ole time last weekend at their annual bass tournament. Walker Mishue of Lumberton took third place, Wall Recycling took second, and the Big Fish winner and first place went to Robert and Gage Canady of Hallsboro. Congratulations gentlemen.
Both active and off duty LEOs and their support staff are invited to have a free lunch on the Sheep Dog Foundation today, May 14, from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. at 426 South Lee Street in Whiteville. This is the organization’s fourth annual cookout giving back to brave men and women who serve and protect the community. To go plates will be available for those who need to eat and run. The Columbus County Department of Aging will also be feeding some important residents today. The department will be hosting a picnic for senior citizens at the fairgrounds from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided along with some music, entertainment, and guest speakers. Door prizes will be given away, and vendors will be set up for the crowd to enjoy. The Columbus County Fairgrounds can be found at 886 Prison Camp Road.

Southeastern Community College Small Business Center will be hosting the Open ‘Doore’ Leadership Series for rising leaders and entrepreneurs on Thursday evening, May 15, at 6 p.m. in T Building room 120. The speaker will be Robert Doore, former NFL executive and current leadership consultant, and he will be teaching about having the mindset, tools, and inspiration to lead with purpose. SCC is located at 4564 Chadbourn Highway.
The Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum will have Lunch on the Lawn on May 15 at 11:30 a.m. on the museum’s grounds. Tickets are now available and can be purchased at the depot for $25 each. A quilt exhibition and raffle will be held the day of the event. The facility can be found at 201 Flemington Drive.
The YWCA Lower Cape Fear will hold an open house on May 15 at 11 a.m.to unveil their brand-new Early Parenthood Program facility and to introduce the Grandparent Support Network. The annual Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony honoring the courageous individuals who lost their lives in the line of duty will be held this Friday, May 16. The event will begin at 11 a.m. at the CCSO located at 817 Washington Street in Whiteville.
If you’re a bookworm, then the Chadbourn Community Library has an event for you. On Saturday, May 17, at 8 a.m., the library will be having a yard and book sale. There will be plenty of items up for grabs, so bring some cash and head over to 301 North Wilson Street this weekend.
The East Columbus Education Foundation Swamp Keepers will be hosting a spring gold tournament on Saturday, May 17, at the Riegelwood Country Club. The 501c3 non-profit is a volunteer-based group that serves East Columbus Jr-Sr High School, and they are raising money to benefit for the Adaptive Playground Project for special needs children at the school. The group still needs $100 hole sponsorships and donations of sporting goods, coolers, gift baskets, gift certificates, sports apparel and memorabilia, and golf course certificates. Join the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville for Second Saturday Storytime with their partners from the Columbus Council of the North Carolina Reading Association. These Storytimes take place on the second Saturday of each month with a nature-based theme. Books and activities are geared for ages 7 and younger, but all are welcome. Registration is not required. The museum asks that you notify the NCMNS-Whiteville staff ahead of time if you plan to bring groups of 10 or more to visit the Nature PlaySpace or other parts of the museum. The Columbus Baptist Association’s Nicaragua Mission Team will be collecting clothing to carry to the children during their annual mission trip. Nicaragua is a tropical environment, so summer clothing is preferred. All infant and toddler sizes for boys and girls are needed, along with boys’ clothing for 5 and up. Please make sure the items are summer clothing in good condition, and free from rips, tears, stains etc. Donations can be dropped off at the CBA anytime Monday-Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or if you have a large amount, a pickup can be arranged by calling 910.642.2155. The ‘Kids Introduction to Microgreens’ workshop will be held on May 18 at 3 p.m. at the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum. The children will be having a ball painting flowerpots and playing in dirt, so please dress them accordingly. Space is extremely limited to 15 spots, and parents can register their youngsters by calling Janet Tyler at 910.770.6017.
Tickets for the Kaleidoscope of Hope Soiree to benefit Carolyn’s Kaleidoscope Child Advocacy Center are still for sale for those interested in attending. The cost is $75 per person, $100 for two tickets, or $500 for a table of eight. Silent auction sponsorships are also available. The gala will be held on May 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the Vineland Station Depot in Whiteville. Fair Bluff will be having their annual Watermelon Festival on July 26. Spots are filled for food vendors, but the chamber still needs crafters, artisans, and some local organizations to set up and peddle their information and wares at the event. The NCMNS-Whiteville will also be hosting Movies on Madison again this summer. On May 30, children and their families are invited to bring a chair or blanket and sprawl out on the facility’s lawn to watch Disney’s live action version of “The Little Mermaid.” Come out to set up your seat and learn about underwater creatures before the movie begins. “The Little Mermaid” is rated PG and runs 135 minutes. This is a family-friendly event, so no pets, no coolers, and no alcohol or smoking permitted. Refreshments will be available for purchase. This event is made possible by the NC Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville and the Columbus County Arts Council. It is sponsored by the International Paper Foundation. The museum’s address is 415 South Madison Street.
St. James Missionary Baptist Church will be having their ‘Magnified’ Vacation Bible School on June 23-27 beginning at 5:15 p.m. each evening. The church is located at 3245 Old Northeast Road in Lake Waccamaw. A full list of VBS summer programs will be published soon in our Church News.
