Here’s today’s Bottom Line

High pressure is on life support over the area today as a southerly flow of very moist air starts to take shape ahead of a cold front that will slowly approach the area on Thursday.

Thursday will feature in-and-out clouds and sunshine along with relatively low chances for showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon thanks to that robust southerly flow.

The front drops south over the area on Friday bringing a much better chance for showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms on Friday could produce some heavy rainfall.

The latest guidance suggests that the front actually pushes much farther south than originally thought, and then hangs up oriented from the FL/GA line curving northward to the Cape Fear. Low pressure then develops along the front Saturday while a secondary front tries to push down from the north. This will result in much cooler temperatures along with occasional showers and thunderstorm through Mom’s Day weekend. The low-pressure center lifts northeast, away from the coast, while another area of low-pressure forms over southern Georgia by Monday. This also lifts north and east over the eastern Carolinas as we go into Tuesday, thereby keeping occasional showers and thunderstorms over the area into next Wednesday.

Blended models still point to between 2 and 3 inches of rain for Columbus County between this morning and 8 AM Tuesday May 13th. This is an “average value” across the area. As we experienced last weekend, rainfall totals could vary widely.

Mother’s Day is likely to feature mostly cloudy skies with occasional showers and thunderstorms.
