Columbus County’s only emergency shelter for children will reopen June 30 at the Boys and Girls Home at Lake Waccamaw. Solomon Center was closed for a year due to renovations and a lack of staffing. The center will have ten beds available for children who have been removed from their homes by Social Services or law enforcement. The center is designed to house children in need for 30 to 90 days.

Solons are discussing a bill that would give the state, not local governments, the right to grant approval of planned urban developments like those in Pireway and the proposal for Old Lake Road. Critics say the move would insert more politics into the process, while supporters say streamlining the process for developers would encourage positive growth.

Another bill quietly making its way through the general assembly would force municipalities to get permission of county commissioners before annexing planned developments. Under House Bill 348, towns and cities would have to ask permission if the annexation would increase school enrollment by 100%, unless the municipality compensates the county for the loss of student funding.
