Clifton Freeman, Jr.

On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, an Angel visited New Hanover Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, NC and called our father, grandfather, brother, and uncle to his Heavenly home at approximately 2:00 am.

Clifton Freeman, also known as Buck or CJ, son of the late Chief Clifton Freeman and Vera Mae Patrick Freeman was born June 22, 1942 in Columbus County.  He was a highly devoted family man; when you saw Buck nine times out of ten his brother, Lacy was with him whether working or fishing.

Clifton was a member of the Buckhead Hunting Club and a Charter member of E-Z Bass Master Club.  He won numerous bass tournaments across the state of North Carolina.  He enjoyed the fellowship at these tournaments and he never met a stranger.  He was the life of the party, always laughing and carrying on.  Clifton served as a Boy Scout leader of Troop 502 for a number of years.

Clifton was a graduate of Waccamaw Indian High School and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.  After high school he, enlisted in the US Army serving three years, one of which was in Korea.  Upon returning home he joined the family logging business working along side of his grandfather, WJ, his father, Clifton, his brothers, Lacy and Danny, his sister, Priscilla.  Clifton retired from logging in 2007.

He is survived by his daughters, Charlotte and husband, Jerry Mitchell of Lake Waccamaw;  Melissa and husband, Don Brewington of Clinton, NC; son, Clifton O’Neal Freeman and wife, Mary Ann of Bolton.  He had eight grandchildren and six great grandchilddren; one sister, Priscilla Freeman Jacobs; a sister-in-law, Reba Jacobs Freeman and a host of nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clifton Freeman and Vera Mae Patrick Freeman; former wife, Letha Mae Jacobs Freeman; brothers, Lacy and Danny Freeman.

His funeral service with military honors will be at 2:00 pm Friday, June 13, 2025 at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, Rev. Zach Jacobs, Rev. Howard Jacobs and Pastor Russ Emanuel officiating.

His family will receive friends 1:00 – 2:00 pm Friday at New Hope Baptist Church prior to his service.
