Rodney “Sonny” Lee Hammond

November 7, 1935 ~ June 17, 2025 (age 89)

Rodney Lee Hammond of Cerro Gordo, lovingly known as “Sonny” went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family; he lived a wonderful life of 89 years.

Sonny was born on November 7, 1935, son of the late Shafter Hammond and Mina Nance Hammond. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his siblings, Eloise McRae, Mattie “Matt” Nance, Marjorie Anderson, Doris Greene, and Peggy Herring.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025 at Worthington Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1:30-2:45 p.m. prior to the service on Friday.

Sonny enjoyed life; In his younger years, he played professional baseball, as a pitcher for the Cincinnati Red Legs, as it was called at that time. Sonny was a charter member of the Cerro Gordo Fire & Rescue, having served on the founding committee of the department. He served as mayor of Cerro Gordo and held a career in law enforcement, having worked with the Department of Corrections and Columbus County Sheriff Office. Above all, Sonny loved God, his family, and NASCAR.

The surviving family includes his loving wife of almost 67 years, Jean Arthur Williamson Hammond of the home; two children, Sheri H. Noble and husband, Andy, of Chadbourn, Arthur Shayne Hammond and wife, Stephanie, of Cerro Gordo; grandchildren, Brett Noble, Jean Ashley Bell, Fielding Hammond, Bess Frankoff, and Seth Noble. Sonny also leaves behind 13 precious great-grandchildren, whom he loved and adored.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cerro Gordo Fire & Rescue.
